CHAPTER NINE

Dean and I linger on the street near Town Hall, stealing more kisses as snowflakes whirl around us. When people start spilling from the building, we make a beeline toward Cloverleaf Drive, not wanting to get caught up fielding more questions.

We go back to my place and spend hours talking and getting to know each other for who we are as adults. There’s some cuddling and hand holding and kissing, and I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a part of me that’s itching to rip Dean’s clothes off and have my way with him, but I know it’s too soon. Way too soon. That becomes the mantra I repeat to myself every time he touches me and sets my heart racing: It’s too soon, it’s too soon, it’s too soon.

It’s after two in the morning when Dean finally announces he should head home. We make arrangements to meet for brunch tomorrow since I’m not due at work until one o’clock. At my door, we share one last kiss that’s sweet and yet hot enough to make it impossible for me to fall asleep for another hour. Good thing I can sleep in and have a lazy morning until it’s time to meet Dean for brunch.

The next morning, a ringing phone infiltrates my Dean-related dream. When a glance at the clock tells me it’s not even nine, I’m tempted to roll over and try to go back to sleep, but my responsible side wins out. What if it’s Clara or my parents? Or Dean?

“Ginny, it’s me,” says a shaky voice on the other end when I pick up the phone. It takes me a second to realize it’s Katy. “I’m so sorry if I woke you. I know you’re not scheduled until later today, but my mom just called and said my dad was rushed to the hospital. They think he had a heart attack.”

I bolt up in bed, untangling myself from the covers and throwing them off. The shock of her news, paired with the cold hardwood floor wakes me up fully. “I’ll head to the café right now,” I tell her, rooting through my closet in search of clean clothes. “Unless you want me to call one of the other girls to work and I can go to the hospital with you?”

Katy lets out a stifled sob, followed by a loud series of sniffles. “You’re such a good friend,” she says in a wavering voice, sniffling again. “My sister is coming to get me, so if you could just come in and take over my shift that would be great.”

“Of course. I’ll be there in ten minutes.” I say goodbye and hang up the phone before stripping out of my pajamas and yanking on jeans and a sweater. I dash to the bathroom where I brush my teeth, splash my face with cold water, and pull a comb through my tangled hair. I make a face at my pale, makeup-free reflection in the mirror, then shrug. I don’t have time for anything else.
